Meta's open fundraising ecosystem
For most of their existence, Meta's fundraising tools focused on supporting donations that happened directly on Facebook or Instagram, even as nonprofits that raised money primarily on their own sites and platforms leveraged Facebook and Instagram as channels for distribution. When a nonprofit or supporter shared one of those offsite fundraising links on Facebook or Instagram, there was no trust infrastructure behind it and minimal context that would help a potential donor convert with confidence.
I led product design on opening the platform to offsite fundraising: shaping the vision and executing a complex multi-organization transformation to make Meta’s apps an effective fundraising channel for nonprofits regardless of where the donation itself happens. Since launch it has unlocked sharing fundraisers in rich new ways and supercharged the billions of dollars given through the platform.
